Indian Nurses Association of Illinois Calls for Action in Wake of Police Action on Nurses in Kottayam
September 15, 2017
Chicago, Illinois – Indian Nurses Association of Illinois (INAI) is disheartened and outraged to see that the nurses in Kottayam were subjected to undue force by police on September 15,2017. We call for the Kerala Government and Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the these actions and to make necessary changes in the departmental policies and procedures.
This association finds the actions on videos in the media posted by different sources from many angles were totally unacceptable and at some point violent. INAI see the police action on Utah nurse Alex Wubbels with the same sentiment. No nurses should be treated this way and we condemn any undue police force and see it as human right violation whether it is in USA or India.
Code of Ethics for Nurses states the nurse as someone who “promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient.” It is unfortunate that the nurses are subjected to abuse, harassment and violence in many occasions.
We urge the Kerala Government to stand by the nurses to see that justice is served. It is crucial that everyone involved should be able to work collaboratively and find solutions through dialogue.
